February 2010 PRAYER & PRAISE
for the Yakut (Sakha) people, an indigenous people group in northern Russia:
Praise God
1. For a new Yakut Church being planted in Churapcha.
There are currently 8-10 people gathering regularly with Alexander, a local Yakut man, who is in-training to be the leader. This large town of about 10,000 plus Yakut people is located 3 hours east of Yakutsk.
Remember this fall when we mentioned meeting a young Yakut girl, Nadia, in Moscow going on our flight to Yakutsk. Well, this is her hometown and we would like to get her connected.
2. That 2,000 copies of the Yakut version of the Right Choices Bible have arrived in Yakutsk.
But there’s one major hitch! Pray that we will receive the correct freight bill number so the local company will give us the books. We are excited about distributing this book which encourages us to act the way God wants us to act. There are either blessings or consequences to all our choices in life. This 368 page book has many colored pictures.
3. That The LAMB in the Yakut language has been sent to a printer.
We have been plagued with technical problems and delays concerning the layout! Consequently, we decided to submit the book to “The Bible for Everyone,” a large Christian printing house, in Saint Petersburg. Pray that they will work efficiently. They will also ship the book to us sometime in March, Lord willing. They also printed the Right Choices Bible.
Pray
1. For God’s wisdom for the InterAct Board meeting February 4-6 at the Home Office in Oregon as they choose new leadership and direction for the mission.
There is a leadership crisis with both the Executive Director and the Field Director for Alaska-Russia resigning this winter. Good candidates from the membership are being considered for both positions. Alaska and Russia will be separate divisions again.
2. For four men on a 6-week evangelistic excursion to the northern part of Yakutia.
They disappeared into the dense ice fog and -49° temperature on January 29th in a 4-wheel drive vehicle designed for off road travel. They will be visiting a number of unreached villages along the Indigirka River and elsewhere with the Good News plus encouraging isolated Christians.
3. For strength and wisdom as we sort through a 16-year collection of ministry and personal belongings.
We plan to take a bare minimum back to Alaska. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure! The problem is determining which is which. Another problem is to find the best person for those extra things. Pray, too, for wisdom concerning our apartment.
4. For our trip starting February 3rd to visit five Yakut churches west of Yakutsk.
We expect to be gone for a week or so. Pray that the weather will not be too extreme, for our safety, and especially that our team will have an effective ministry for the Lord’s glory.
Trivia Question: Name the coldest, inhabited city and villages in the northern hemisphere?
Hint: the village of Snag, Canada bordering Alaska takes the record for North America. It was -81° Fahrenheit (-63° Celsius)! But some other places in the north are colder…
><> We and the Yakut people need to consider the same question God asked Job: “Have you entered into the treasures of the snow?” Job 38:22
Do we really comprehend the marvels our Creator God made in the ice and snow or even understand how they affect our lives and world? God also has His human treasures in the snow.
Here’s how God answered your prayers last month:
Praise God
1. That The LAMB in the Yakut language for children is all ready for printing.
See #3 under “Praise” above. We had planned to print it in Yakutsk, but too many technical problems forced us to decide to print the book in Saint Petersburg.
2. That the Yakut version of the Right Choices Bible by Josh & Dottie McDowell has been printed and is on its way to Yakutsk.
See #2 under “Praise” above.
Pray
1. For the annual Christian Youth Conference here in Yakutsk January 4-7.
Forty some Russian and Yakut youth from throughout the Republic of Yakutia attended the conference. Their main theme was how to have genuine, inner peace with God. Fellowship was great as expected and also safe travel back home.
2. For our colleagues, who are currently in China, and have lost their documents.
They waited several weeks in China to replace their documents! They recently returned to the USA to await the birth of their second child and plan to return to Russia later this year.
3. For the “backburner” literature projects in the Yakut language that can now be moved to the “front burner”.
Yea! The text for a Yakut booklet concerning spiritual growth has been completed. Pray that the layout will be completed soon. We plan to print this one here in Yakutsk.
Thanks so much for your prayers on behalf of the Yakut (Sakha) people and for us and others serving in this northern part of the Russian Far East.
Serving with God’s frozen chosen in Yakutsksome of His marvelous treasures in the snow!

Trivia answers: Yakutsk is the coldest city in the world with a record -84° Fahrenheit (-64° Celsius). Near Yakutsk are the record holding, permanently inhabited Yakut villages of Oymyakon with -96° Fahrenheit (-71° Celsius) and Verkhoyansk with -90° Fahrenheit (-67° Celsius). Really cool places to live!
